Opinions on affordable connected security camera systems

I share a duplex with my aging parents and we've been discussing getting some security cameras. Given the myriad of options, and a limited budget, I was hoping to get some help with selecting a system that gives us the best bang for our buck.
I've looked at Eufy, Blink, Arlo, Ring, and a few others, but it can be hard to separate hype from reality.
Also, something that works with Apple's HomeKit would be preferred.
My preference is not to have a service, but to have the video stored on my network.
Any advice offered would be appreciated!

Hey @mattman.  You basically have 2 options here.

First option is a subscription service.  I think this would be the less expensive option.  I personally use Ring and have been very satisfied with it.  We're paying about $100 a year, currently for 4 devices, but I can add as many more devices as I want for no additional cost.  Although I don't have it, the Ring alarm system would also be included in that yearly fee.

The second option would be to purchase security cameras along with an NVR (network video recorder).  This would give you 24/7 recording that would be stored on the NVR at your location.  However, this would be the more expensive option BUT there would be no yearly fees unless you decided to have the NVR backed up to a cloud service.

    Thanks @Lee_Bo!

I'll look at Ring again, but I was under the impression there was an upfront cost for the hardware. Some of the cameras I've looked at offer the ability to offload the recordings to storage you have on your site, somewhat like the NVR, but not as expensive. Those are the options I've been leaning towards, but I'm trying to sort out the reviews and marketing data and get to the details.

    The help is much appreciated!

Yes, with Ring you buy the cameras, so there is an "up front" cost involved.

Lowest upfront cost would be $20 Wyze cameras (assuming you're based in the US). So that would be $80 for 4.

I assume the optional firmware with RTSP (expert only) would allow integration with lots of services and applications
If you're looking for 24/7 recordings, that's a lot of storage! I think the Nest cams offer a subscription that does that.

WyzeCam is definitely worth a look. For the price of one other camera, you can pick up several WyzeCams. They are useful, have onboard and could storage for free and can do most of the things other cams can.

They don’t have HomeKit integration yet, but they are working on it.

Buy one or two and test it out. If you don’t like it, you haven’t lost much.

Ditto for the Wyze! I have Nest doorbell cams but they are not cheap ( although great ) and have the security system and fire detection if I were concerned about my parents thats the way I would go then you have it all covered!

Wyze looks great, as they have local storage in the camera and are conveniently priced, but unfortunately doesn't at this time offer an outdoor option. You can purchase weather proof cases, but they don't provide protection against cold, and the operating temperature of the camera is 32 degrees Fahrenheit on the low end. Since I live in Alaska that won't do.

    Back to the drawing board!

Hi @Mattman. I have an Eufy eCam system that’s seems to work pretty well. Video is stored locally on an included SD card that is mounted in the base station. Cameras are rechargeable and the estimate of a charge lasting a year with the cameras on default settings seems pretty accurate. Cameras an be mounted both indoor and out and they have onboard mics and speakers so you can talk over the system too. Hope this helps.
