Ipads not detected

The ipads of my kids do not appear in the list of connected devices, despite being connected to the lan. Can anyone help me understand why? They are old models, can this be a reason?

It shouldn't matter what version that they are, as long as they are connected to the same network and obtain an IP address, they should show up in a network scan.
Since this isn't the first time that this question has arisen, would you be able to provide some screen shots of this event?  One of the network connection, and one of the list of network devices right around where the iPad should register to be?  Please take the precautions to safeguard any sensitive information prior to posting the images.
