Lost / Changed Device Names Due to Latest MacOS / IOS Updates

WHT Member Posts: 2
Hi, All:
Just upgraded IOS to 14.0 and MacOS to 10.15.6.  Devices some devices, when seen on Fing, were blocked and had their name adjusted (iPhone and iWatch).
Rescan through FingBox was only allowed by either MAC or IP address.  Once scanned, about 75% of devices now show up as "Generic".
1. Are other users experiencing this same effect?
2. Is there / Will there be a Fing Update that will address the issue (assuming it is an issue)?
3. Is there a way to identify and rename the Devices without wiping everything clean and starting over?

Thanks, in advance for the input.

@WHT, this might be a result of a change in ios14 for MAC address privacy that Apple implemented.  See this faq from Apple...  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211227

”To further protect your privacy, your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple Watch can use a different MAC address with each Wi-Fi network.”

Apple by default now changes their MAC addresses to something unique per WiFi connection.  You can turn the feature off and see if that clears things up, the article gives you directions.  I’m not sure if that will revert it back to its original Mac and put everything back to the way it was but worth a try.  Otherwise you will need to redo your device details in Fing as you did previously but once you do, it should stick.

@Robin or @Ciaran, is this something you’ve seen as well?
Thats Daphnee, she's a good dog...

    Thanks @Marc
As of now, @WHT I would request you to disable the Private MAC address from Apple device and issue will be resolved. Please check this link for detailed information: https://www.fing.com/news/private-mac-address-on-ios-14
